From Mar 31-April 6, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 85 adults and 23 children following 43 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• At last week's West Point blood drive, 837 units of lifesaving blood was collected. Thank you to everyone who came out to donate throughout the week!
• Newsday reported on the #LIRedCross assisting 4 residents after a fire on Lancaster Place (Nassau County) on Sunday.
• Cheers to volunteer Vivian Moy who represented our region and the American Red Cross during a conference hosted by the German Red Cross.
• Please join us to wish Jose Dominguez, our Long Island Chapter CEO, safe travels as he heads to Kentucky to support communities across the Midwest and South that have been affected by several tornadoes and severe flooding.
• We shared a recap of our annual Advocacy Day, where the three regions of New York go to Albany and connect with state legislators.
• Our colleagues from the Western NY Red Cross were featured on NY1 on donating blood as the spring season rolls in.
• Last week our Long Island Board of Directors gathered for its quarterly meeting at the new Mount Sinai South Nassau specialty care facility in Long Beach.
• Last month, we held an inspiring and informative virtual panel discussion about women in emergency management, featuring former FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell, NYC Emergency Management first deputy commissioner Christina Farrell and FDNY deputy chief Michele Fitzsimmons.
• Nassau County Legislator Seth Koslow is helping to #EndHomeFires with this PSA.
• The Norwood News reported the Red Cross is assisting one family after a fire on East Kingsbridge Road on March 27, 2025.
• Newsday reported on the Red Cross assisting 9 families after a fire and evacuation from an apartment building on School St in Baldwin, NY (Nassau County) on March 30.
• The Daily Voice reported on the Red Cross assisting 3 families after a fiery car crash into a home on South Highland Avenue in Ossining (Westchester County) on March 29.

• Over the weekend, our SAF Team showed its support on National Vietnam War Veterans Day at Calverton National Cemetery and at Hauppauge, NY.
• Last Saturday, our Home Fire Preparedness teams installed 109 free smoke alarms in 38 homes across Manhattan and the Bronx, while providing fire safety education to 104 people.
• Newsday reported on the #LIRedCross assisting 3 families after a fire on N Monroe Avenue in West Islip (Suffolk County).
• What do you get when you mix Red Cross team members and a love for sharing our cultures? An amazing potluck celebration for Red Cross Month.
• We posted this video highlighting the Red Cross helping residents in February after a fire in Washinton Heights.
• Brooklyn Borough Hall, the Mario Cuomo Bridge, One World Trade Center, the Empire State Building and many other landmarks throughout New York State were all lit red at the end of March in honor of Red Cross Month and Giving Day. Watch the ESB lighting ceremony on Facebook Live here.
• US Weekly covered the lighting ceremony and NBC News’ correspondent Chloe Melas story here.
• Kappa Lambda Chi Military Fraternity Inc., a fraternal organization for military service members and veterans, was looking for organizations to support and the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces team was a perfect fit.
• The official website of the US Army and the BK Reader published articles on the new Red Cross Office strengthening support for the military community at Fort Hamilton.

• Over the weekend, the #LIRedCross marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Brentwood.
• Last Thursday, CBS2 reported on Westchester County celebrating Red Cross Month.
• Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Carl Heastie, Harvey Epstein and other New York State legislators rolled up their sleeves to help save lives by donating blood at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
• Last Wednesday, we held the Red Cross Heroes Gala where we honored heroes like Martin Thomas and FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy for saving lives. We also celebrated the contributions of corporate leaders who stepped up to help with disaster relief throughout a record-breaking 2024.
• The American Red Cross in Greater New York recognized the Brentwood St. Anne's Church Council 4757 Columbiettes and Knights of Columbus for their service and dedication to fulfilling the mission of the American Red Cross.
• During the New York State Senate session on Monday, there was a resolution to proclaim March as Red Cross Month and Senator Gustavo Rivera recognized three Red Cross volunteers for making a difference in their community.

• Last Thursday, atop the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, Greater New York Red Cross CEO, Doreen Howe, presented Angel Martinez with the Lifesaving Award for heroically using Red Cross skills to save a life.
• News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting 11 adults and 2 children after a fire on Beach Avenue in the Bronx.
• We had a great ribbon-cutting ceremony last Wednesday for the new Red Cross office in Fort Hamilton to serve the community.
• Join us to say CONGRATULATIONS to our Metro New York North Board Member Lauren Walsh, who will be recognized by the YWCA Greenwich as the Purple Purse honoree on May 1.
• The Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Nassau County was shining bright red last Tuesday night in honor of Red Cross Month!
• My Brother's Keeper, American Red Cross in Greater New York, and Brentwood Public Library partnered to teach “Preparedness with Pedro” to students in grades K-2.

• Our team on Long Island was proud to support the first responders who continue to battle the wildfire near Westhampton Beach on Sunday.
• Last Saturday, we had a great day at the 2025 SOMOS Inc New York Conference in Albany! Thanks to all who stopped by our table to learn more about the Red Cross’ work across New York State.
• Last week, our preparedness team visited the Vive School in Yonkers, to share important preparedness information with 181 students in English, Spanish & Creole.
• Last Thursday, an exclusive ALC Truck show was held to benefit the Metro NY North Red Cross.
• News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting 3 families after a fire on 9th street in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn.
• Celebrating Red Cross Month:
• Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin, Legislator Tom Donnelly and County Executive Ed Romaine presented #LIRedCross volunteer Magnolia Chiri Garcia with the lifesaving award who performed CPR on someone before police and EMS arrived.

• We kicked off ‘Red Cross Month’ with a day of service last Saturday as 26 Red Crossers fanned out across Queens to install 159 FREE smoke alarms and provide fire safety education to 41 families.
• We shared this video highlighting the Red Cross efforts to provide emergency housing to 22 families after a 3-alarm fire on Ellis Ave in the Bronx on February 14.
• Last Thursday, Patch and ABC7 reported on the Red Cross providing emergency housing to 6 families after a fire on West 191st Street in Washington Heights.
• Last Wednesday, NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher shared that the Red Cross had registered 7 adults for emergency assistance after a 2-alarm fire on Bank Street in Manhattan. ABC7 and 1010Wins also reported on the Red Cross response to the fire.
• Mayhem, the Red Cross Pet Therapy Dog, wanted to pass along a few tips on how to keep your dog safe this year.
• Last Tuesday, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson partnered with us to host an important disaster preparedness and community resilience workshop for our community-based organizations and service providers in the Bronx.
