From Mar 31-April 6, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 85 adults and 23 children following 43 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

At last week's West Point blood drive, 837 units of lifesaving blood was collected. Thank you to everyone who came out to donate throughout the week!
Newsday reported on the #LIRedCross assisting 4 residents after a fire on Lancaster Place (Nassau County) on Sunday.
Cheers to volunteer Vivian Moy who represented our region and the American Red Cross during a conference hosted by the German Red Cross.
Please join us to wish Jose Dominguez, our Long Island Chapter CEO, safe travels as he heads to Kentucky to support communities across the Midwest and South that have been affected by several tornadoes and severe flooding.

Over the weekend, our SAF Team showed its support on National Vietnam War Veterans Day at Calverton National Cemetery and at Hauppauge, NY.
Last Saturday, our Home Fire Preparedness teams installed 109 free smoke alarms in 38 homes across Manhattan and the Bronx, while providing fire safety education to 104 people.
Newsday reported on the #LIRedCross assisting 3 families after a fire on N Monroe Avenue in West Islip (Suffolk County).
What do you get when you mix Red Cross team members and a love for sharing our cultures? An amazing potluck celebration for Red Cross Month.
We posted this video highlighting the Red Cross helping residents in February after a fire in Washinton Heights.

Over the weekend, the #LIRedCross marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Brentwood.
Last Thursday, CBS2 reported on Westchester County celebrating Red Cross Month.
Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Carl Heastie, Harvey Epstein and other New York State legislators rolled up their sleeves to help save lives by donating blood at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
Last Wednesday, we held the Red Cross Heroes Gala where we honored heroes like Martin Thomas and FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy for saving lives. We also celebrated the contributions of corporate leaders who stepped up to help with disaster relief throughout a record-breaking 2024.
The American Red Cross in Greater New York recognized the Brentwood St. Anne's Church Council 4757 Columbiettes and Knights of Columbus for their service and dedication to fulfilling the mission of the American Red Cross.
During the New York State Senate session on Monday, there was a resolution to proclaim March as Red Cross Month and Senator Gustavo Rivera recognized three Red Cross volunteers for making a difference in their community.

Last Thursday, atop the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, Greater New York Red Cross CEO, Doreen Howe, presented Angel Martinez with the Lifesaving Award for heroically using Red Cross skills to save a life.

We had a great ribbon-cutting ceremony last Wednesday for the new Red Cross office in Fort Hamilton to serve the community.

We kicked off ‘Red Cross Month’ with a day of service last Saturday as 26 Red Crossers fanned out across Queens to install 159 FREE smoke alarms and provide fire safety education to 41 families.
We shared this video highlighting the Red Cross efforts to provide emergency housing to 22 families after a 3-alarm fire on Ellis Ave in the Bronx on February 14.
Last Thursday, Patch and ABC7 reported on the Red Cross providing emergency housing to 6 families after a fire on West 191st Street in Washington Heights.
Last Wednesday, NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher shared that the Red Cross had registered 7 adults for emergency assistance after a 2-alarm fire on Bank Street in Manhattan. ABC7 and 1010Wins also reported on the Red Cross response to the fire.
Mayhem, the Red Cross Pet Therapy Dog, wanted to pass along a few tips on how to keep your dog safe this year.

We recently discovered this illuminating 1992 documentary from our VHS archives about the history of prominent African American leaders in the American Red Cross and decided to unveil it during #BlackHistoryMonth.

Heroes in Action! Last Saturday, 27 of our dedicated volunteers installed 120 alarms in 50 homes across Washington Heights as part of our Sound the Alarm campaign, which is celebrating 10 years of protecting families.
News 12 reported on the Red Cross helping a family after a fire on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx.
Last Thursday, NY Daily News, ABC7, and News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting residents after a fatal fire on North Windsor Avenue in Bay Shore (Suffolk County).
Last week, we had two impactful days at the NY State Capital, where nearly 50 Red Crossers, staff, and volunteers united from all corners of our state to engage with over 100 state legislators. Five New York State legislators were recognized for their commitment to the Red Cross mission. The Brooklyn Eagle reported on Sen. Scarcella-Spanton being one of the legislators honored.

Over the weekend, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, NYC Emergency Management, FDNY and the Mayor’s Office gave updates on how the Red Cross opened a reception center and worked with partners to help the displaced residents after a major apartment fire in the Allerton section of the Bronx.
NY1 , News 12, ABC7, NY Times, CBS2, FOX5, Bronx Times, PIX11, Norwood News, People, NY Daily News, NBC4, Gothamist, and 1010Wins, among other outlets, all reported on the Red Cross response after the Allerton fire.
Last Saturday, Newsday reported on the Red Cross assisting a family after a fire on Woodlawn Rd. in West Hempstead.

Last Week in Review

The Bronx Times, News12 and CBS2 continued to cover how the Red Cross assisted residents for two weeks after the water main break in mid-December.
Last Thursday, our team gathered at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the first Opening Bell of 2025 and recognize National Blood Donor Month.
For the last several weeks, we’ve been sharing clips of the Women in Service we honored at the Women’s Veterans Grove in Central Park like Judy Audevard, Sergeant Major MaryKay Messenger, Deanne Criswell, Major Ophélie Bernecker and Captain Tina Peña.
In the hours leading up to midnight on New Year’s Eve, Red Cross volunteers provided hot beverages and snacks for first responders and partners at Times Square.
