From Oct 21-27, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 139 adults and 38 children following 41 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Over the weekend, we had a day of service on Staten Island with NYS Assembly Members Michael Reilly, Michael Tannousis and Sam Pirozzolo to install lifesaving smoke alarms during fire prevention month.
• Last Friday, News 12, NY Newsday, the Long Island Press reported on the #LIRedCross provided financial assistance to 10 families after a fire on Main Street in West Hampton Beach.
• On the same day, CBS2 and Gothamist reported on the Red Cross assisting 4 families with emergency housing and financial aid after a fire on Beaumont Ave in the Bronx.
• In her latest column with the Greenwich Sentinel, Metro NY North CEO, Stephanie Dunn Ashley, discusses working remotely, using technology to connect with teams on the ground and coordinating reunification efforts in North Carolina.
• Since 2016, Rebecca Tirado has been with the Greater NY Red Cross in different roles. She recently return home from deployment to Florida as a shelter manager and ERV coordinator.
• Chandra Hew also recently finished her two-weeks of deployment in a virtual role to help reunite family and loved ones after Hurricane Helene.
• Vito Reciniello, our Community Disaster Program Manager for Long Island, joined John Lynch on Connoisseur Media to talk about our ongoing response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, and all that is still happening on Long Island while we support our neighbors in the southeast.
• We are so excited to welcome David Jones to Team Red Cross for the 2024 TCS NYC Marathon! He recently shared his inspirational story about how he traveled 17 miles on-foot through Hurricane Helene's debris to make it to his daughter's wedding on the Drew Barrymore Show.
• Debora Bausenwein celebrated an emotional birthday while in Florida as part of Helene/Milton hurricane relief operations.
• Last Tuesday, the Norwood News reported on the Red Cross assisting 3 families after a fire on University Ave. in the Bronx.

Last Week in Review

• Last Saturday, 28 members of our Diverse Communities and Latino Engagement Teams gathered for an engaging training session titled "Presenters in the Making."
• October is Fire Prevention Month and our volunteers, Marty and Leanne, were excited to be part of the Scarsdale Fire Dept Fire Day on Saturday to help promote the home fire campaign and also teach hands only CPR.
• Last Thursday, our volunteers visited the 86th floor of the Empire State Building today in support of the building shining red for the communities affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. ABC7 covered the ceremony. Volunteer Kevin Suttlehan captured the event with his wonderful photos.
• News 12 sat down with Sean Maclean to follow up with him after his 2-week deployment to North Carolina.
• GNY volunteer Sean McNearney has been sharing what his experience has been like in Florida working on the feeding operation.
• #LIRedCross volunteer Vivian Moy also shared what her experience has been like driving an ERV truck in North Carolina to deliver food to residents effected by Hurricane Helene.
• We shared a reel on the Red Cross assisting 6 families after a fire on East 141st Street in the Bronx.
• Our regional CEO Doreen Howe gave an emotional update from Florida on being deployed as a disaster mental health worker. Doreen also appeared in this News 12 clip before Milton made landfall.
• For World Restart a Heart Day, we shared the story of how Paul Miller saved a patron’s life at the 14th Street Y 4 days after he completed his CPR and First Aid training.

• On Sunday, News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting residents after an e-bike fire on Avenue O in Brooklyn.
• Last Saturday, News 12 reported on the Red Cross assisting residents after a 2-alarm fire on East 141st street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.
• Maria, Jose, Bruce, Vivian, Ned, Susan, Bob, Ramon and Dennis all deployed last week to join the over 2100 Red Crossers and partners deployed to Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee to provide relief after Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
• Metro NY North Chapter CEO Stephanie Dunn Ashley recently deployed virtually to help reunify family and loved ones after Hurricane Helene and shared her experience.
• 1010 WINS spoke with Chief External Affairs Officer Desiree Ramos Reiner about the need for volunteers to assist with hurricane relief efforts in the southeast.
• The Staten Island Advance reported on the Red Cross assisting residents after a fire on Henderson Avenue on Staten Island last Thursday.
• Last Wednesday, FOX 5 NY and News 12 checked in with our regional CEO Doreen Howe and NYC volunteer Sean McNerney on their deployments in Florida, ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall.
• Carolina Rengifo, on her first deployment, spoke about her experience in an interview with WSB-TV in Macon, Georgia.

• Lisa, Ross and Marty were at the Greenwich Community Organizations Fair to help promote an upcoming blood drive at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwich.
•  Continuing our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we featured Celia Vollmer, a lifelong resident of Brentwood, N.Y. who has dedicated most of her life to serving and helping others.

• Our regional CEO, Doreen Howe, is on her way to Florida to support the Red Cross response to Hurricane Milton.
• Thanks to 45 of our local team members who have deployed to support Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton like Lynne Franzone, Thomas Reed, Vivian Moy, Matthew Hodgins, Brian Gerber and Sean MacLean (both interviewed by News 12).
• Last Sunday, Metro New York North Red Cross were at the Cos Cob Fire station and Long Island Red Cross attended the Brentwood Fire Department open house to promote fire safety for the start of Fire Prevention Week.
• 90.3 WHPC, the voice of Nassau Community College recently interviewed Long Island Red Cross CEO Jose Dominguez.
• Continuing our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we featured Sara Cabezas, who can be seen regularly volunteering at the chapter HQ.
• We shared more photos from our We Were There panel discussion on mobilizing partners last month and the link to the livestream.
• Megan Van Thomme and Phil Glaser are running the NYC Marathon as part of Team Red Cross to benefit our mission!
