From Aug 19-25, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 120 adults and 35 children following 36 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• Our colleagues in the Western NY Red Cross celebrated the re-opening of the first ever Red Cross chapter, located in Dansville, as was covered by NY1.
• Last Saturday, 36 Stony Brook University Freshmen helped clean Red Cross cots as part of their Community Service Day.
• With the ongoing summer blood shortage, Imana Naqui, Santiago Marquez and Joe Scalice shared why they donate blood and why it's so important to them.
• CBS NY reported that the #LIRedCross provided financial assistance to a Port Jefferson Station family after their backyard collapsed after the rainstorms last week. WSHU Public Radio also reported the Red Cross assisted dozens of affected residents.
• Last Thursday, QNS reported on the Red Cross assisting 3 families after an e-bike fire in Richmond Hill.
• News 12 and Norwood News reported on the Red Cross assisting 4 families after a fire on Decatur Avenue in the Bronx.
• The Rockland County Times reported on how the 5 Towns of Rockland Blood Drive Challenge, sponsored by State Senator Weber earlier in the month, surpassed its goals.

• When disaster strikes, take action! As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other emergencies so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join our disaster team and make a difference in people’s lives.

• Sept 21: The East Harlem COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) is holding an Emergency Preparedness Fair.

From Aug 12-18, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 142 adults and 50 children following 39 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities.

Last Week in Review

• Zaria Ashby shared why she chose to donate blood in the Bronx earlier this year.
• Last Friday, the #LIRedCross participated in the annual National Night Out in Brentwood and #MetroNYNRedCross participated in Spring Valley.
• The Bronx Times reported on the NY Yankees Back-to-School Resource Fair, which included the Red Cross, last Thursday.
• VIDEO Highlights: We posted reels covering recent events like the Morris Heights fire, the Longwood fire and the ABC7 Blood Drive.
• New Yorker Jonathan Wiley shared his harrowing experience escaping an apartment fire and why it is so important to have working smoke alarms in the reel.
• Last Wednesday was the anniversary of the Northeast Blackout of 2003 and we remembered the Red Cross response with these photos and podcast.
• Early last week, our preparedness team hosted participants from the NYPD dual language summer program, Bienvenidos, for a day of learning how to prepare for emergencies.
• A local news outlet, W42ST.nyc, shared the story of the artist who painted the water tower on top of our GNY HQ.

• Last Saturday, News 12 reported on the #LIRedCross assisting 4 households after a fire on Somerville St. in Brentwood.
• News 12, Mid Hudson News and the NY Daily News reported on the urgent need for blood as the Red Cross faces a national shortage.
• Thank you to Congresswoman Grace Meng for joining American Red Cross volunteers to install lifesaving smoke alarms at a Queens home last Friday as part of the Sound the Alarm initiative.
• Our team was excited to join the celebration of Ecuador Independence Day at Queens Borough Hall on Thursday.
• CBS2 reported on the Red Cross assisting 2 families after a fire on Fulton St. in Brooklyn.
• Volunteer Bowen Yu was recently returned home from his deployment to Hawaii and shared what his experience was like being part of the long-term relief operations to assist the residents of Lahaina.

Last Week In Review

• Assemblymember Steven Raga thanked the Red Cross for assisting six families after on 37th Rd in Woodside, Queens. NY1, New York Daily News, and ABC7 reported on the fire.
• Last Saturday, NY Post, PIX 11, NY1, UPI and CBS News reported that the Red Cross helped 22 adults and 10 children after a 5-alarm fire in Queens Village.
• Volunteer Rick Gunter and the SAF team supported the Heroes on the Hudson kayaking event for wounded vets.
• We hosted our inaugural Greenwich Battle of the Clubs Blood Drive, at the Jill and John Coyle Blood Donor Center in Greenwich last Thursday.
• Last Tuesday, the Rockland Daily tweeted about the Metro NY North Red Cross gathering in Nyack to witness the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge lit in red to support the Five Towns of Rockland Blood Drives Challenge.
• We kicked off the Five Towns of Rockland Blood Drive Challenge at Finkelstein Memorial Library with Senator Bill Weber and Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht! News 12 Lower Hudson Valley reported on the challenge and the Rockland News later reported Orangetown had taken the lead.
