From July 21-28, the Red Cross in Greater New York provided emergency assistance to 120 adults and 46 children following 36 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)
- Last Sunday, PIX 11 and 1010 Wins reported on the Red Cross helping 8 displaced families after a fire on Liberty Avenue in Jamaica, Queens.
- Over the weekend, our volunteers celebrated Swiss National Day in NYC by talking about Switzerland's history with International Humanitarian Law.
- Last Thursday, the Red Cross partnered up with the Mt. Vernon Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management to hold a Senior Preparedness Seminar at the Mount Vernon Social Adult Day Care Center.
- We thanked NY State Senator Shelley Mayer for hosting a blood drive in her community and helping to raise awareness on the importance of donating blood.
- PIX 11 and 1010 wins reported last Wednesday that the Red Cross helped 14 people (3 families) who were displaced after a fire on 5th Avenue in Sunset Park.

- Jul 30 - Aug 3: NY State Senator Bill Weber is sponsoring the Rockland Blood Drive Challenge in partnership with the American Red Cross, where five towns compete to see who can collect the most blood donations.
