Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 143 adults and 40 children following 40 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)
Last Week in Review
- Our hearts and thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic wildfires in Hawaii. If you’re looking for ways to help those affected by the wildfires, here is some info from USA Today.
- Over the weekend, four Red Crossers from Greater New York (so far) deployed to help with the Hawaii response both physically and virtually, talking with CBS 2, PIX 11, and News12 Long Island.
- On the eve of his deployment to the Hawaii wildfire relief operation, we featured volunteer Bowen Yu on his journey providing relief in Guam to preparing for the wildfires of Maui.
- For the 50th birthday of Hip-Hop, we celebrated our very own Hip-Hop pioneer and Long Island Volunteer Jemillah Abdul-Kareem aka MC Glamorous!
- NYS Assembly Member John Zaccaro Jr helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with this video PSA.
- Did you catch our interim CEO Celena Sarillo and External Affairs Officer Desiree Ramos Reiner at the 75th anniversary of WABC-TV Day last Wednesday?
- Last Tuesday, News12 reported the GNY Red Cross assisted 9 displaced families affected by a Bronx fire.
- We hosted Senator Alexis Weik at our “Prepare, Respond, Recover” event at the Sachem Library to improve the safety of our community.
- A big congratulations to Red Crosser Ethie and our furry friend Zoe on her 100th pet therapy visit to West Point.
- Volunteer Larry Cryer shared his experience of being a lifelong blood donor donating plasma and platelets for the first time in this post.
- Two weeks ago, our Service to the Armed Forces team participated in Coast Guard Day at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island to celebrate the 233rd Birthday of US Coast Guard.
