Over the last seven days, the Greater New York Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to 155 adults and 48 children following 47 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities. (See below)

Last Week in Review

• On Sunday we celebrated International Day of Friendship. Come join us to volunteer and make new friendships that will last a lifetime.
• We were delighted to continue our “We Were There” panel series at GNYHQ with our panelists Dario J. Diaz Jr., Sal Montoro, and Brian Gerber, as well as our moderator Madeleine Bamford.
• State Senator Iwen Chu helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with this video PSA.
• Last Wednesday, the GNY Red Cross team were guest speakers at the “Emergency Preparedness Workshop” in Brighton Beach.
• Last Tuesday, our preparedness team visited Mount Vernon to share how residents can prepare and protect themselves and their families against home fires, floods and other emergencies.
ABC7 and News12 reported the GNY Red Cross assisted five households affected by a Castle Hill Avenue fire last Monday.
• We spotlighted West Point Cadets and blood donors Emma Arndt and Jackie Comeau who are both athletes and actively recruited by the United States Military Academy out of high school.
• Our NYC Senior Disaster Program Manager Uikki met with Bishop James Pullings Jr. of the Church of God in Christ in Queens to discuss how our organizations can partner to build more resilient communities.

• Aug 8: Join Senator Alexis Weik at our “Prepare, Respond, Recover” event at the Sachem Public Library wherein you’ll receive free emergency preparedness training! The event will take place both in person and over Zoom.

• Last Saturday, our Disaster Preparedness volunteers joined Senator Jamaal T. Bailey and friends at his barbeque in the Bronx's District 36, handing out information and demonstrating CPR. 
• Thanks to our Long Island team members and volunteers who attended our Disaster Cycle Service Meeting at the Brentwood Public Library on Friday! 
• State Senator Alexis Weik and NY Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with a video message. 
• Last week, we featured blood donor Tiffany, who lives with her husband, Lt. Col. Steven Elgan, at the West Point military base with their 7 children.
• July 17 marked the anniversary of the Queens Blackout of 2006.

  • July 17 marked the anniversary of the Queens Blackout of 2006. The Greater NY Red Cross distributed food, water and supplies to affected residents throughout the crisis.

• Thanks to our Long Island team members who supported the Wounded Warrior Project's 16th annual Babylon Soldier Ride, assisting and celebrating our nation’s heroes. 
• State Senator Iwen Chu helped to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with a press conference. 
• Recently, our preparedness team member and international delegate, Jason Lyons spoke to the summer interns at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in New York about his experience working with the American Red Cross domestically and internationally. 
• Our Disaster Health Team and volunteers are continuing to assist displaced residents from historical Northeast flooding. CNN, ABC7, and Spectrum News reported the American Red Cross GNY’s efforts to staff shelters, pass out essentials, and provide emergency funding. 
• Blood Donation Spotlight: This was Cadet Nadia Lape’s second time donating at the United States Military Academy at West Point, giving blood at every opportunity.

Last Week in Review

• Sunday morning, Governor Hochul announced Ontario and Orange County, NY, are in a State of Emergency due to significant flooding from heavy rainfall. Our colleagues from the Eastern New York Region Red Cross are operating a shelter at Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Highland Falls, Orange County, for impacted residents. 
• CEO of Red Cross Long Island, Jose Dominguez, joined News 12 for a segment on hurricane preparedness. Way to go, Jose! 
• Wednesday morning, News 12 reported the Greater NY Red Cross assisted 3 families after a fire spread through an apartment building in Brooklyn. 
• NY State Assembly Members Brian Cunningham and Kenneth Zebrowski are helping to “Sound the Alarm” about home fires with their video PSAs. 
• Learn more about how marathon runners Ian, Owen, and Abang will support the Red Cross by running in the upcoming NYC Marathon in November. 
• Last Monday at Doles Recreation Center, Red Cross caseworkers provided assistance to Mount Vernon residents affected by the fire on Sidney Avenue.
