Over the last 7 days, the Greater New York Red Cross provided emergency assistance to 183 adults and 56 children following 40 local disasters. Here are some highlights from last week and a preview of upcoming activities (see below).

- This year's Sound the Alarm:
- We kickoffed Sound the Alarm campaign to install free smoke alarms in Chinatown and Harlem. Thank you FDNY and volunteers for making the launch a success.
- We held a press conference at Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association with community partners to promote Sound the Alarm fire safety to Chinatown residents.
- Hundreds of volunteers met at IBEW Local 25 and kicked off our Sound the Alarm campaign to install smoke alarms all over Long Island!
- The American Red Cross partnered with New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins to Sound the Alarm to her district in Yonkers this May 11th.
- On Friday, our Senior Leadership and few of our amazing board members went on a mission trip to Puerto Rico to observe and track the progress of recovery and rebuilding projects to make communities more resilient.
- Early Thursday morning, News 12 reported that residents of a Grand Concourse building evacuated due to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Con Edison was called to resolve the issue, and the Red Cross provided temporary shelter for those displaced.
- During the 34th annual Red and White Ball where we honored First Lieutenant Victor E. Prato with the Excellence in Service Award. Victor Prato’s determination and courage is an inspiration to us all.

- We are actively recruiting for the following volunteer positions: Volunteer Screener, Home Fire Campaign Team Member, Disaster Action Team Member, Recovery Caseworker, Pillowcase Presenter, and Community Preparedness Education Program Team Member. - May 10, 13: Red Cross blood drives will take place from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Greater NY Red Cross building located at 520 West 49th Street, Manhattan. Schedule an appointment to donate today!
